Car covers can protect your car in any weather. However, you need to clean your car covers from time to time as well. Especially if the car cover has been in use for months together, it might be time to clean the car cover as well.
The question which then arises is, how to clean a car cover?
Today, I will share with you easy ways to clean a car cover. When you are aware of them, you can maintain the car cover and increase its lifespan.
How to clean a car cover?
The best way to clean a car cover is to hand wash it. Once you do so, you will not have to worry about any kind of pests, contaminants on the car cover.
If you do not want to wash it by hand, you can wash it in the machine. However, for the same, you have to look at the instructions that come with the car cover. The label of the car cover will have these instructions. Only when it allows machine washing, you have to go ahead with it.
While washing it in the machine, you can use a mild laundry detergent powder. Since it is mild, you will not have to worry about discoloration of the car cover or any other damage to the car cover.
I will now share a few tips that will help you clean the car cover efficiently.
Tips to follow while cleaning car cover:
The tips I will highlight now will ensure that you can clean it properly and do not end up damaging it in cleaning it.
1. Know the fabric in use:
The very first thing which you need to understand is the fabric of the car cover. Depending on the fabric, the way in which you clean it will vary.
If it consists of a sturdy fabric like polyester and nylon, you will be able to wash it in the machine.
If it consists of any other material, washing it in the machine might not be a good idea.
Once again, the label of the car cover will help you determine its fabric.
Once you read the label, there will be no confusion.
2. Do not dry clean:
Many people think that by giving the cover to the dry cleaners, they will be able to clean it quickly.
The problem is that the process of dry cleaning can be pretty harsh on the car cover.
Not only that, the dry cleaners might use harsh chemicals on the cover as well.
In this case, when you dry clean the cover, you might end up damaging it.
That is why, under no circumstances, you should dry clean the car cover. Dry cleaning might clean it but also reduce the life of the car cover. That is why; it is not a suitable solution.
3. Do not use fabric softener:
On the face of it, using a fabric softener might seem like a good idea when cleaning a car cover. When you look at the properties of the car cover, you will realize that most of the car covers are water-resistant. That is why; they will protect your vehicle against rain.
The problem is that when using a fabric softener, will reduce the water-resistance of the car cover. The next time around it rains, the water might percolate through it. In that case, you will have no other option but to change the car cover.
To avoid such a problem, you have to never use a fabric softener while cleaning the car cover.
I have covered various types of car covers on my site, like mini Cooper car covers, Porsche 911 car cover. Most of them are water-resistant. If you end up using a fabric softener while cleaning such covers, you will reduce their water resistance and might have to buy new ones.
That is why; this is one of the most essential tips you have to follow while cleaning a car cover.
4. Avoid the use of hot water:
Most car covers can easily handle high temperatures as well as UV rays. The reason for the same is because they are built for outdoor use.
The problem is that they are not designed to be exposed to hot water. Hot water can remain in contact with the cover for a long time.
That is why; it can result in extensive wear and tear.
If you plan to hand wash it or even wash it in the machine (if permitted), then you shouldn’t wash it with hot water. Hot water will cause extensive damage over time. It can significantly reduce the life span of the car cover.
At the most, you can use lukewarm water. Ideally, you should use water at room temperature.
5. Do not use bleach:
When you’re choosing a detergent for cleaning the car cover, you have to ensure that it does not consist of bleach.
The reason for the same is that bleach can cause discoloration. Also, bleach is pretty harsh as well. That is why; it can damage the car cover as well.
If you have noticed above, I have recommended using a mild detergent. Mild detergents do not consist of bleach.
If you’re choosing a car cover detergent, make sure that you look at the ingredients of the same. Once you do so, you will select a detergent that does not consist of any bleach.
6. Don’t use the dryer:
After you wash the car cover, the next question which will arise is, can you use the dryer?
You should not!
You should let the car cover dry naturally. Even if it means that you have to wait for at least a couple of days before using the car cover again.
If you dry in the machine, the car cover might suffer from extensive wear and tear once again.
When you follow these few tips, it will become easier to clean the car cover without damaging it.
Thus, with the help of my guide above, cleaning the car cover certainly becomes easy. Once you do so, you can once again use it to protect your car.
